May 29, 2013 marks the 100th anniversary of the world premiere of ‘The Rite of Spring’, featuring a revolutionary musical score by lgor Stravinsky plus visionary and innovative choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky.
ALDancers with the Portland State University Orchestra under the baton of Ken Selden joined world wide celebrations in performance: new choreography by Agnieszka Laska – premiered Friday June 7th at 8:00 PM. The “…electrifying…” premier launched The Rite of Spring Centenary Oregon Tour. First stop: Astoria Music Festival, June 29th at 7:30 PM.

“…Portland choreographer Agnieszka Laska, who like Diaghilev has never been afraid of controversy, has leapt to a new stage in her artistic development, creating a show which inventively combines distinctive elements of her choreographic repertoire with moves inspired by classic ballet and the landmark 1987 Joffrey Ballet “Rite” reconstruction (Vaslav Nijinsky’s original choreography has been largely lost). And then, just when you think you’ve seen it all, she tops it off with an unflinching gaze at the work’s barbaric denouement…”

“…Laska’s own choreography was dramatic and emotional, balanced between narrative and abstract, deeply engaging and captivating. At times I lost track of the story and lost myself completely in the swirling movement and energy onstage. The dancing was heartfelt and attacked the choreography with commitment and passion…”

…Agnieszka Laska’s work was a poignant tribute to the original Nijinsky movements [...] the dancers performed with skill and passion. Lauren Michelle Richmond contributed an intense performance as The Chosen One during the “Sacrificial Dance”….

“…Overall, the evening was simply brilliant. Everything worked, including the scanty costumes created by Rebecca Price. Add to that the piano music, the clever choreography and the enthusiasm of the dancers, the poise of the lead dancer, the eerie lighting and the bare staging. Complexity produced simplicity. It was raw, visceral. Memorable [...] And when the instigator of this riot was coaxed on stage to receive her traditional bouquet, the adulation would have made Nijinsky proud…”

“…a live performance by the ALDancers of an excerpt from “The Rite of Spring.” The ensemble delivered an exuberant dance, choreographed by Agnieszka Laska, that embraced the music full throttle, and it pointed enthusiastically to June when they will perform the entire ballet…”
